The Amidah
The power of Hebrew Through Movement comes in its ability to unlock the Hebrew of Jewish prayers and blessings. No, not all the words, but key ones that are concrete enough to introduce with Hebrew Through Movement that children will hear again and again.
The Jewish Education Center of Cleveland (JEC) created HTM supports for the Amidah. If the specific version your children hear and use isn't exactly what is presented, we encourage you to make adaptations from the "close-enough" materials. Students need to have learned through Foundational Level 5 and the words לתת לקחת from Foundational Level 6 of Hebrew Through Movement to have enough vocabulary to integrate HTM in their prayer learning.
Prior to the start of the learning year, the HTM and t'fillah teachers (if two separate people) should create an integrated calendar, matching HTM learning to specific t'fillot. It is the t'fillah teacher's job to offer background on the prayers/blessings. It is the Hebrew Through Movement teacher's task to introduce the meaning of specific vocabulary words. Staying connected during the year is helpful to the integration of learning on behalf of your students. [Note: The JECC has created jPrayer - a highly praised website with curriculum that blends t'fillah teaching, Hebrew Through Movement and decoding practice. T'fillah teachers are especially encouraged to check out it's engaging lessons and resources, as well as the JECC's acclaimed "I'm Gonna Stand Up" website with gold and silver challenges related to the Amidah!]
The HTM materials may be downloaded with an easy click, below. They each include a few pages of lesson ideas (scripts) and vocabulary/ concept photo resources. The photos are best printed in color and laminated for ease of use.
