Holiday Unit, Shabbat

On this page you will find:
  • A copy of the Shabbat  lesson guide from the most recent edition of the curriculum
  • Shabbat picture cards that you may download and print
  • A video of a sample lesson, which is offered neither as an exemplar nor as the only way to teach the lesson. Rather, it is an example of a real teacher, teaching real students.  At the end, one student talks about what she now understands about the candle blessing that she did not understand, previously.
  • A video with all the vocabulary pronounced and translated (look below for the yellow background). The video was posted to help parents hear and better understand the language that their children are bringing home! Feel free to share the link with them.  
  • Word cards. Note that these are generally used in later years of Hebrew Through Movement study when children are working on Print Literacy through HTM.  ​

Shabbat picture cards

These photos illustrate HTM Shabbat vocabulary from the most recent edition of the curriculum guide. Check to see which ones match the Option you are teaching then print those one-per-page, ideally in color. If you are teaching virtually,  send your children printed copies of these photos, 2 or 4 per page. While teaching you can ask them to "lift up" (and show you)  the picture of whatever word you have said.

Sample Lesson

This is an earlier video from our video collection.  ​Note that HTM no longer suggests that groups be divided by girls and boys.  Also, in the current edition of the curriculum guide, words are only introduced in the singular >> נר   and not נרות.
